Globally, extreme poverty affects over one billion people and poverty two billion. VENRO is committed to a development policy oriented at fighting poverty by especially protecting vulnerable groups like women, children, the elderly and disabled people.  

Many factors make fighting poverty difficult. These include the spread of infectious diseases like HIV/ AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, bad governance, violent conflicts, fights over resources or climate change. VENRO deals with different challenges posed to development and together with its members tries to develop possible solutions.  

Fighting poverty is one of the fields the organisation is active in, focussing on the Millennium Development Goals (MDG), financing development, the consequences of globalisation and gender justice, as well as on understanding the interdependence of environmental issues and poverty. It emphasises the need to reform German and European development co-operation, focuses on European development policy and humanitarian aid and engages in advocating and educating development policy in Germany.  

Trade, migration and diaspora, as well as the environment and development, are other important topics for VENRO.
